Pumice Rock is rock that is formed when lava cools quickly above ground creating a unique rock with many air pockets. Pumice Rock is one of the many quality mediums offered by rePotme for orchids, bonsai and all fine plants. We offer it as an individual potting media, and also in our custom “make your own” Select-A-Blend mix section.

Our Cactus Blend potting mix includes coir, perlite, pumice, sand, and stalite. This fluffy and free draining mix made with coir is ideal for cactus and epiphylliums. Pumice rock and granite chips combine to provide the drainage that these plants demand. We recommend this mix for plumeria as well. This mix is also good for Christmas Cactus and we suggest adding some Ancient Forest Humus to the mix for these plants. We make this mix with Coir which is ground coconut husk and the absence of peat is key to getting rid of fungus gnats. Fungus gnats are attracted to peat moss, and almost all commercially available plant mixes are made with peat moss. This coir based mix has no peat and the coir we use is a bit more costly, but it is also more durable, resistant to fungus (and the gnats), and is a wonderful free draining mix for prized houseplants and tropicals. Sponge rock, also known by the name Perlite, is a very common ingredient in orchid mixes and for good reason. Sponge rock decreases compaction of mix, increases aeration and retains moisture. Sponge rock is a volcanic glass that expands when heated and becomes very porous. The small sponge rock, #2, is wonderful in seedling and peat mixes.

Our Bromeliad Blend tropical mix includes coir, small fir bark, small sponge rock and granite chips. This fluffy mix is ideal for epiphitic tropicals such as Bromeliad, Anthurium, Hoya, Clivia, Staghorn Fern and other Ferns. For years fir bark has been a staple in orchid mixes. Small fir bark is especially suited to seedling mixes or in mixes for orchids with very fine roots. Fir bark breaks down more quickly in wet humid environments and as it breaks down it uses nitrogen. Fertilizer with a higher nitrogen component is required for fir bark mixes. Fir bark comes from the bark of Douglas Fir. Almost 2 quarts in a resealable bag.
