Water has a high surface tension. This means water molecules attract each other and don’t want to be separated–this is why water forms droplets! However, this high surface tension prevents water from effectively infiltrating into hydrophobic soils (peat/clay) and results in water pooling on the surface or channeling through the path of least resistance in the soil profile. Both of these outcomes result in areas of the roots not receiving adequate irrigation.

Surf Side 37 is a non-ionic surfactant that improves soil wettability by binding to the hydrophobic coating on soil particles and reducing the surface tension of water. This allows water and nutrients to easily penetrate through thatch/peat into the root zone where they can be utilized by the plant. Our time-tested chemistry ensures plant safety and will not damage or stress plant tissue. Surf Side 37 is biodegradable and plant-friendly.

After 15 years of experimenting with surfactants, Robert Oechsle founded Montco Products in 1969. At that time, wetting agents were still relatively unknown and misunderstood, though Montco Products was the first producer to emphasize impact on root hairs as opposed to the speed at which water was moved; with increased speed comes increased phytotoxicity. Founder Robert Oechsle knew that haste made waste, and described his wetting agents as “the tortoise, not the hare.” He designed his products to prioritize the health of the delicate root hair over the speed of water penetration, resulting in the safest and most effective product on the market.
